Electronista - Who are they trying to fool?

Yesterday, the popular web site, Eletronista.com, ran an article called, "Exclusive: Gateway talks about One, the iMac." I, for one, would just like to know who the interviewer is trying fool, anyway, when they state in the article, "Let's face it: the One will inevitably get comparisons with the new iMac, even though both were developed without a direct influence on each other........"

Wow, can you believe that? Did they actually say, "EVEN THOUGH BOTH WERE DEVELOPED WITHOUT A DIRECT INFLUENCE ON EACH OTHER?" Well, they did and it is complete 'horse manure slugging' on the part of Eectronista to suggest such utter and unbelievable rubbish! Mind you, they are correct to a degree...... namely, that Apple was NOT influenced by the Gateway One, or, for that matter, by any other manufacturer, or computer model, be it from Gateway, Dell, HP or whom ever! Its the other way around Electronista!

I can't believe that any one would say or write anything so foolish, let alone that anyone would believe such garbage. The truth is that the Gateway One was indeed influenced by the iMac, even though it might not have been the most recent aluminum model.

It is quite clear, for those with eyes and brains in their heads to see, that both the new aluminum iMac and the Gateway One were, in fact, both influenced by the previous iMac design and form factor, which, by the way, dates back several years, starting with the iMac G5!

Surely Eltronista isn't going to be so foolish as to suggest that Gateway never heard of, or saw any of those particular iMacs sometime during the past two years? After all, they were only big news on CNET, ZDNET, Gizmodo, etc., and may I dare to suggest.... Eltronista itself! No, this is just another case of Apple bashing on the part of Electronista, a web site that has now lost a lot of credibility with me, and no doubt, other people who clearly see through their bias, crappy reporting and their twisting of the facts.

In conclusion, all I can say to you Electronista is this: Shame on you... you should be truly ashamed of yourself for trying to push such propaganda and rubbish, in the face of the obvious facts.... facts that are plain to see even from the most casual of observers, but apparently not from yourself!

And thats my 2 cents 4 this Friday, September 28th., 2007.

Gateway's iMac Clone!

Well, despite not having the time, looks like I will get to sneak a little post into my blog after all, albeit a tiny one.

At one time, a friend told me that, "I consider Apple to be a has been; an insignificant player, with NO influence anymore." Hah, the jokes on him as the entire computer industry seems to struggle to come up with inferior Apple imitations, as Gateway did today, with its "ONE," an all-in-one, iMac rip-off! Nice machine, but still no match for the iMac.

For beginners: It can't run as much software as the iMac, without the ability to also run OS X. It is OS X, after all, that makes a Mac a Mac and no other computer manufacturer can copy that.

Nice try Gateway; better luck next time!

And thats my 2 cents 4 Thursday, September 27, 2007.

Amazon MP3 - Something Smells Fishy?

Tom Reestman's just did an excellent piece on the new Amazon MP3 Store, that many are claiming is the very first real competition for the iTunes Music store. He says, in his blog, The Small Wave, that something smells a little fishy; why is Universal Music giving the new Amazon MP3 Store things that they absolutely refused to give to the iTunes store? Why are they suddenly being so nice?

It does seem rather fishy that after fighting Apple, cat-and-nails, to prevent DRM free music and those low, low iTune Store prices, they suddenly give in and give Apple's competitors what they refused to give to Apple in the first place. Apple itself is shut out.... but why?

Tom, as usual, asks some pretty good questions and gives us some good possible answers, so, do yourself a favor and read his post yourself, and while your at it, some of his past postings. I agree with Tom - something smells to high-heaven here!

Is it possible that Apple's primary focus on the needs and desires of its iTunes customers, over that of the needs and desires of the music industry made them feel it was a lot easier to try and create a new competitor than dealing with Apple? A case of the irresistible force meeting the proverbial unmovable object? Quite possibly.

Way to go Tom, keep those posts coming.

And thats another 2 cents of mine, 4 this Wednesday, September 26, 2007.

The Stupidest Criminal

Do you know the man in the above picture? Well, if you do the Vancouver, BC, police would most likely want to talk to you. You see the man in the picture is using a stolen iMac and unknowingly, while sitting there, is being secretly photographed by the iMac's built in iSight camera.

Is he the actual thief, or is he someone who, knowingly or unknowingly, purchased the hot iMac? We don't know that yet, but some are calling it the case of 'The Stupidest Criminal!"

Either way the man is blissfully unaware that he is being secretly photographed with a piece of software called Flickrbooth, which, in the background, is photographing every move of his tattooed body while sending and automatically feeding it, in the background, to a special Flickr account for the entire world to see on the internet!

If he is indeed the 'Stupidest Criminal,' he is also, for the time being, now also one of the most famous as thousands of people the world over are witnesses of his stupidity, all thanks to Flickrbooth and Flickr.com.

Thank God he wasn't doing anything dumber than just sitting there shirtless.... he could have been standing there pant-less!. Thank God he wasn't! I can just imagine what Flickrbooth could have recorded for the world to see. I would think that if your dumb enough to steal a computer than probally your also dumb enough to do other embarrassing things too.

As great as Mac computers are, I'm quite sure that I would never want to steal one, but what if someone secretly installed, via some type of Trojan software, something like Flickrbooth on your computer? Ohhhh, that would be bad! Not that you or I would do anything illegal or stupid, but the mere idea that others all over the world could be watching you as you innocently go about your computer tasks is rather frightening. Sort of like that Jim Carrey movie from 1998, The Truman Show.

If I value anything its my privacy and the very thought that others, using secretly installed programs like Flickrbooth on my computer is scary to say the least. For sure, if I ever buy a used computer, I will first cover-up any built-in cam and then promptly erase any and all original content that might have come with it.

That does it, from on........ no more working on my computer in my underwear or what have you, just to be on the safe side.

After all, I may be stupid but I'm not dumb!

And thats my 2 cents 4 Wednesday, 26th. of September, 2007.

Talking Plants? Hello... this is your Petunias calling.......

Are you like me, someone who always forgets to remember to water your house plants? Ever wish someone would remind you to water them? Well, thanks to the world of high-tech computers chips you never have to worry again. That's right my plant loving friends, because now, whenever your house plants need your attention you now can simply have your petunias, gladiolas, roses or daffodils phone or email you to let you know that they need water or a little loving attention!

Now Don, your thinking, we know that your a little off the deep end, but really, come on......... petunias sending you emails or phoning you to let you know what a big jerk you are for not paying attention to them is just a little too weird even for you! Not really, because now, for your convenience, a company called Botanicalls is offering a new service that does exactly what I just described.... allows your petunias, daffodils or what-nots, to simply phone or email you when ever they need water, etc. Not only that, but you can phone them to see how they are doing, as well! Amazing but true!

From the Botanicalls web site they state:

"Botanicalls: The Plants Have Your Number
Botanicalls opens a new channel of communication between plants and humans, in an effort to promote successful inter-species understanding.

Botanicalls allows plants to place phone calls for human help. When a plant on the Botanicalls network needs water, it can call a person and ask for exactly what it needs. When people phone the plants, the plants orient callers to their habits and characteristics. Call 212.202.8348 to hear more about each of the plants.

They also go on to state that: "Each plant on the Botanicalls system is equipped with sensors connected to an Arduino microcontroller which contains code particular to that plant type. When a plant's microcontroller determines that the plant needs to make a phone call based on current sensor information, it sends data through an Xbee wireless radio to an Xport gateway. This gateway connects to the internet, where it contacts a PHP script with the plant's ID number and type of need. PHP then packages this information and passes it on to Asterisk, an open-source telephone system, which generates the call. When the call is placed, a prerecorded audio file is played, expressing the particular desire of that plant."

Wow! This is as amazing as it is creepy! Imagine watching a football game when the phone rings and your petunias tells you that it needs water, new potting soil or sunlight? I don't know about you, but the very idea, though as intriguing and practical as it might be, sounds a little too weird and far fetched for my old brain to grasp. The Botanical website, however, not only explains how the system works, but believe it or not, also allows you to actually view videos and see and listen to the system in action.

Maybe I will eventually get used to the idea of plants calling me, but so help me, if my petunias ever calls and tells me it needs the keys to the car because they got a hot date with my neighbors gladiolas......... I"M OUT OF HERE!

So, if your having trouble remembering your 'forget-me-nots,' then let them remember for you, with a little help from the folks at Botanicalls.

And thats my 2 cents on talking houseplants 4 this rather cloudy Tuesday, September 25, 2007.

The Sexiest Blogger!

Of the estimated 50 to 70 million plus blogs out there, most are not worth the time of day to read. Some, of course, are very well written by highly intelligent and analytical minds, and are thought provoking, entertaining and very well worth the time and effort to read. Some of these blogs, that come to my mind, and some of my personal favorites, are: Scobleizer, Daring Fireball, Fixyourthinking, The Small Wave,The Diary of Fake Steve Jobs and the Diary of Fake Larry Ellison, etc.

Recently, however, after installing a new blog widget for my own little mediocre 'practice' blog, a widget called Blogrush, that automatically advertises your blog on other blogs, I discovered through it, an interesting blog called, Tastyblogsnack. And tasty it is indeed.

So, what is so tasty and different about this blog, which was created by Justine Ezarik of Pittsburgh, Penn? Well, for starters, I found her article on "Leave Steve Alone" well written and very entertaining, but that is not only what makes this blog so appealing as you will see after visiting it. You see Justine, who, by the way, is better known as iJustine, is a professional freelance graphic/web designer and video editor and her design and video skills are very apparent in her blog. The design of the blog is very clean and professionally done and it is a delight to look at and read.

And yet another reason why I find that this blog so appealing is because of what I didn't expect to find, namely that .... iJustine, herself.... is a major Babe! Yep, this is one blog that really doesn't need to have any articles at all..... the videos and pics of iJustine are more than enough to keep one coming back. The videos are short, very well edited, entertaining and best of all...... iJustine is usually in them! Even an old cranky geek, like myself, can enjoy this as it is not pornographic or insulting to the taste, but yet, at the same time, Tastyblogsnack is still just that, visually tasty and a fun site to visit because this beautiful blond is anything from being the stereo typical 'dumb blond.' Nope, not this one. This cool girl just happens to be extremely intelligent, well written, professional and entertaining. Way to go iJustine!

Most bloggers are not really brave enough to post their their personal pictures on their blogs, like Scoobie or myself (Some day, when I'm not too fatigued, I shall remove mine as I'm convinced ....... its scaring visitors away!) However, one look at iJustine's pictures and videos makes you realize that hers is one that enhances her blog, making it so very, very tasty to to visit. This girl is beautiful, but she is far from being the stereo typical 'dumb blond' as I already pointed out. Nope, not our iJustine. This girl is cool, well written, witty, charming and very, very intelligent, as is obvious from the fact that she is a dedicated Mac user. Ah, if only all Mac users, no, make that all computers users could be as charming, witty and beautiful as she. The creator of Tastyblogsnacks has, and what can I say, also 'great taste' in computers. Oh, if only I wasn't so old and ugly..... I'd marry you iJustine!

In conclusion, I normally think of bloggers, the really good ones anyways, as being intelligent, witty, charming, entertaining and thought provoking, as I pointed out... but not necessarily beautiful, most likely because I think of them mostly as males. Not until, of course, iJustine that is.

Thanks iJustine for your entertaining blog and thank you Blogrush for bringing her delightful 'social networking' blog to my attention.

So, if you want to just sit back and have some fun, by all means, visit and enjoy the wit and beauty of Tastyblogsnacks today. As beautiful as iJustine is, it is not just that pretty face that makes this blog work, but rather her charm, wit, professionalism and intelligence that makes the bog feel and look just right. iJustine's beauty is just a bonus and a very nice one at that.

I hereby award iJustine the title of: 'Sexiest Blogger of the year.' However, please note: As stated, iJustine is more than just a pretty face...... she's a blogger and a damn good one at that!

The Funny Side of Apple

If you enjoy anything and everything about Apple, the iPhone, iPod or the iMac, etc., then your bound to enjoy the funnier side of all of these.

What do I mean? Quite simply -- Geekculture's, the ' Joy of Tech' funny page. This is one site that exposes the funnier side of anything or anyone related to Apple. Anything, or anyone, involved in all things things Apple, trust me, is fair game for the the comic genius's of the 'Joy of Tech' team.

Joy of Tech, by Nitrozan & Snaggy, is a hilarious and entertaining place... a cartoonist view of all that makes up the wonderful and 'wacky' world of Apple and its insanely great products. Its also one site that has become a daily ritual for me and, if you ever tried it, or will, it will, no doubt, will also become a daily ritual for you too. Why? Simple again... its very well drawn, witty and as funny-as-hell! I especially like the cartoon example that I'm posting here: "Save the Zune TV Telethon."

So, I urge you, to tickle your funny bones, if you haven't already visited this wonderful and wacky, 'all-things,' Apple related website.... then please: head on over to it immediately! It will be well worth your time. Trust me, unless you have no funny-bones left in your body, the Joy of Tech team will leave you laughing..... and laughing a lot!

As they say, "Laughter is the best tech support."

And thats my 2 cents, on this great Apple website, 4 this Friday, the 21th. day of September, 2007.

Thanks RoughlyDrafted

One of my favorite blogs, Roughly-Drafted, has an excellent post concerning of all of the rubbish that British journalism is fostering upon their readers. This especially includes the BBC, who's bias against Apple can be easily gleaned by just reading their headlines. Well, fortunately, other media, including Tom Reston's, 'The Small Wave,' 'Fixyourthinking' and 'RoughlyDarfted' etc. are around to expose these 'blithering' excuses for journalists. Case in point, as reported by RoughlyDrafted:

"Daniel Eran Dilger
The BBC has joined the London tabloid press in printing a series of articles skewering Apple over invented suppositions based entirely upon misinformed speculation and some outright lies. The worst part is that the BBC is being grossly hypocritical in its misinformation campaign against Apple, because the company is up to its eyeballs in the Microsoft-encrusted scandal surrounding its proprietary, Windows-only iPlayer imbroglio."

Roughly Drafted continues, "Beyond Spin: Bill Thompson Wades Through BBC Hypocrisy to Spread False Information.
It's bad enough that the BBC needs to bend facts to support fear, uncertainty and doubt about the iPhone. Now consider that the BBC--as a public corporation funded by British TV license taxes--is building its web video strategy on failed, proprietary technology propped up by an internationally convicted monopolist. At the same time, its publishing a uninformed rant based on speculation and conjecture that accuses Apple of doing things that approach the gravity of its own activities."

RoughlyDrafted exposes Thompson's Specious Attack on Apple, his lies on Apple's ringtones, Linux's music management, etc. and I'm glad they are reporting it, as I find Bill Thompson so faulty in his assumptions and conclusions that I, for one, can't bear to read any more of his dribble. Dribble so infested with an anti-Apple bias that Its enough to make my stomach queasy and the veins in my forehead pop and explode all over the place and messing up my little blogs appearance.

So, in conclusion, to all you great bloggers out there who have the stomach and fortitude to battle against the likes of these lousy reporters, like those of the British press.... my sincerest thanks! You are providing us all with an invaluable service ...... a service called ..... THE TRUTH!

Keep up the good works Roughlydrafted, The Small Wave, Fixyourthinking and all you other brave blogging souls out there.

I salute you.

And thats my 2 cents on lousy and bias reporters and those valiant and brave bloggers, who, with their words expose them, 4 this Thursday, September 20, 2007. (Wow, this must be my longest sign-off ever!)

Intel Developers Forum

The road map for Intel is looking quite amazing, and likewise, that of future Macs. CEO of Intel, Paul Otellini demonstrated, during the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, the new and upcoming "Penryn" family of processors and, as well, the next-generation "Nehalem" architecture. This is the industries very first 32-nanometer (nm) chip, a chip so small that Mr. Otellini said that it could contain as much as 4-million transistors on the space of the period at the end of this sentence. These amazing Intel creations should see the light of day sometime in 2009.

Mr. Otellini stated, "Our tic-tock strategy of alternation next generation silicon technology and a new microprocessor architecture -- year after year -- is acceleration the pace of innovation in the industry. "Tick-tock is the engine creating today's most advanced technologies and keeps them coming out at a rapid cadences. Our customers and computer suers around the world can count on Intel's innovation engine and manufacturing capability to deliver state-of-the-art performance that rapidly becomes mainstream."

This is amazing when I think back.... way back to my youth when the personal computer was in its infancy. It seems just like yesterday that my friends and I were drooling over the latest Motorola 68000 chip, or that of the Intel 8088 chip sets. I also remember my very first computer, the amazing, and if I do say so, almost sexy, Commodore Pet. It was an all-in-one powerhouse. Yep, that 8-bit supercomputer (at the time) ran at the almost unheard of speed of 1 mega-bits per-second and came complete with a huge 8 or 9 inch, black-and-white screen! Not only that, but incredible, so don't eat your hearts out, it featured an astounding 8 k of ram (double other pc's) and stored all of its programs on its built-in-cassette tape recorder.

But now, the most amazing part of all - the price. All that stupendous power came for a measly price of $1280 Cdn. dollars. In other words, today I could go out and buy a 20-inch color, all-in-one iMac with one billion bytes of memory, 250 billion byte hard-drive and a 64 bit dual processor!

The advances in the personal computer business, as can be seen in the comparison with the Commodore Pet with that of the newly release aluminum iMac is nothing short of incredible!

At the pace of innovation in the industry, one that, by the way, is leap frogging itself every few years, I can't help but wonder what we will get with that same $1,200 in just a few short years from now. How about a computer with 100 gigabytes of ram, 50-quadrillion bytes of hard drive (most likely flash drive, or something totally new,) holographic screen that projects full 3D images -life size, and naturally voice recognition and speach? Who knows, but what ever it is, we know one thing, it will make todays computers look even more simple than the new iMac makes the Commodore Pet does today.

For more information from the Intel development form, my nephew, Rob, is covering all the news, in person, at his excellent site: http://www.techgage.com

Also Appleinsider, the source of this posting will fill you in with their excellent insights: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/09/18/intel_shows_off_32nm_chip_offers_update_on_penryn_nehalem.html

Lessons from a 14-year-old kid

My two favorite blogs might be 'Fixyourthinking' and 'The Small Wave,' but they are not the only blogs that I read, from time-to-time. One other blog that I read very frequently, through links from Macsurfer.com, is the excellent blackfriarsinc. blog. Since I was rather disappointed with todays O2 announcement, I will concentrate on todays excellent posting from Blackfriars, on the lessons the author learned from his 14-year-old son's hard work to earn the money to buy his very own refurbished iPhone.

The author states in his piece, "Lessons from my son's iPhone,' "My 14-year-old son has saved his allowances and earned money all summer to purchase an iPhone. And after the early Christmas present that Steve Jobs delivered on September 8 -- the $200 iPhone price cut -- he finally scrounged enough money to actually buy an 8 Gigabyte refurbished version for $349 from the Apple Store. And last night his long-awaited purchase arrived, as can be seen below."

Wow, and to think that Steve Ballmer laughed at the iPhone and said it was too expensive, or in other words, he implied: 'No one will ever buy it! Hah, no one will buy it my foot! You know that you have a winner on your hands when a kid will work his butt off to buy something, and in this case, it just happens to be the iPhone. (Smart kid!)

The author of Blackfriars goes on to point out, "Once our plan was right, the iPhone experience was flawless. ......... Robert fired up iTunes and activated his phone. Within five minutes, he had a phone number and a working phone on our family plan. The contrast with the AT&T store experience was like night and day; it was just click, click, click, and go."

Wow, what can I say about that? Well, for starters.... this is amazing, absolutely amazing! To think that a 14-year-old boy could do what he did with his iPhone is truly amazing in light of what most people have to go through with their cell phones. Oh, the agony I personally experienced setting up my old Motorola and now this. It rather makes me feel, in retrospect, down right jealous and cheated with my old carrier. That experience was painful and downright awful, so I won't dwell on it any further than needed.

Oh, how I hope Mr. Steve Ballmer, up in his Redmond ivory tower, somehow gets to see this interesting Blackfriar piece, and for that matter, all the other Apple and iPhone bashers, especially the iPhone's competitors. Maybe they will learn some valuable lessons from the iPhone that could benefit their customers?

The conclusion of the Blackfriar's posting couldn't be summed up in words any better:

"I already have some takeaways from the transaction.

Even with my recent vintage Nokia mobile, I'm jealous of my son's phone experience. As I have written on the specs on my Nokia E61i far surpass those of the iPhone; it has 3G data, WiFi, video recording, zoom camera, installable software, and countless other whizzy features. Yet, I'd trade my phone for even a 4 Gig iPhone in a heartbeat. Why? Because I've spent nearly two months configuring my phone to do about half as much as my son could do within minutes of unboxing his phone. The experience of using my Nokia compared to the iPhone is comparable to using PC DOS compared to Mac OS X. The former is painfully functional but never helpful, while the latter is delightful and simple."

Wow again! "Yet, I'd trade my phone for even a 4 Gig iPhone in a heartbeat." Yep, I couldn't say it any better.

And thats my 2 cents 4 this glorious, and I mean absolutely, glorious bright and sunny Tuesday, September 18, 2007.

Did Apple Blow Its Chance With Vista?

A lot of people lately have been, more-or-less, dicing a recent article by Randall Stross, from the New York Times, for his recent articled: "A Window of Opportunity for Macs, Soon to Close." The question is, is it really? I don't think so, because in business its really not a case of one competitor against the other for so called market share, but rather, more of a case of achieving the highest profit and margins.

In the article, Mr. Stross opines on the rage that erupted last year when Apple delayed Leopard a few times and thus eliminating any possibility that Apple could capitalize on Microsoft's own delays and really take market share from the Redmond giant.

He looks at figures provided for June 2007 of 3 percent market share for the Mac and states, " ...according to Roger L. Kay, president of Endpoint Technologies Associates, a consulting firm in Wayland, Mass. That forlorn number looks even worse compared with Apple's peak worldwide share of 14 percent in 1984, the year the Macintosh was introduced and sales of Apple II computers were the company's mainstay."

Well, the most important numbers for Apple, something he and others like to overlook, is not the world market share numbers, but the market numbers in the U.S. It is here were Apple shines and makes most of its revenues, and, naturally, its were Apple has and Apple will continue to concentrate its marketing efforts. It is also important to note, that as a computer provider, Apple has chosen to concentrate most of its efforts at the consumer level and not big, or for that matter, small business's as do most, if not all, as do the other computer providers do.

Here, the story really gets interesting, as close to 6 % percent of the U.S. market clearly not only belongs to Apple, but it could, some estimate, be much higher then most people realize. Why? Its simple: most computers sold, be it Windows or Linux systems are mostly sold to business's, where as most Mac systems are sold to consumers. Estimates of Apple's real market (consumer) share in the U.S. may, in fact, according to some in the know, be anywhere from 15 to as high as 21 % of the market. Now those, my friends, are really, really interesting numbers and would help explain the profit machine that is known as Apple Inc.

After all, as Apple's charismatic CEO, Steve Jobs said, and I paraphrase here, "Even though we could make cheap systems, like others, for $500 or less, we choose not too. Its not our style." This is exactly what is going on at Apple, a company that has the brains and vision to see that systems that sell for less, bring less profit and less potential other than that of increasing its over all market share. But why market share - why bother beating your brains out for a large percentage of the market that results in very small profits, and in some cases, no, many, many cases, in NO Profits at all, in fact sometimes big loses?

Not only is it not Apple's style to go after the extremely low-end of the market, style wise, but from an investment point of few it makes good business sense not too. These low-end systems are just that, and are barely worth the time, money, expense and effort to bother with, other than for bragging rights in market share. This is why most computer companies are not making any profit because these low-end systems simple don't and can't make money, they simply have or little or no profit margins built-in for anybody to make a real buck on. So, why should Apple follow the same path? I see no reasons, no reasons what-so-ever!

This, my friends, is why the over all world market share numbers are really not that important to Apple and why the American market is where Apple, or any other manufacturer, should be concentrating on. I much rather make $200 profit on a million $2,000 computers than $5 bucks on 20,000,000 units sold from these cheap systems. Remember: Apple is a business, a very big business, and the first rule of any successful business is profits and it is here that Apple has and is continuing to put all other computer manufacturers to shame, even though they may out sell Apple ten-to-one and despite their higher market share, as does Dell does compared to Apple. Apple looks small, in numbers of units sold, compared to Dell, but Apple easily equals or blows past Dell in profits and margins on far few units sold then overall world market share would have you believe.

Mr. Stross also wrote, "The best time for gaining market share is when your main competitor stumbles while introducing an entirely new version of its core product. Thanks to Microsoft's lumbering pace, Mr. Jobs had six years to look forward to the moment when XP would be replaced by Vista."

This is not so, simply because Apple is not competing for the lower-end of the market. It doesn't matter how many low-end computer units are sold, or how much higher that segment is compared with the high-end, high-quality segment is, and that is exactly where Apple is at, the higher priced and higher qualitative segment of the market place. In other words, it really doesn't matter if GM sells a thousand times more Cavilers compared to BMW's top-end sport cars, because both BMW and Apple, thank you, are doing very nicely in their targeted market segments - the higher-end segment.

In this area, I agree mostly with Paul Thurrot, one of the really big technology writers out there when he said, "This guy (Mr. Stross) goes out of his way to explain how poorly Vista is doing from both a sales and compatibility standpoint, which is sort of astonishing given the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. This poor reporting of facts may invalidate the entire article somewhat. (He gets market share data from Endpoint, which presumably measures sales, and then compares it with data from Net Applications, which measures Web usages. These are two completely different things.)

My own analysis of Apple's market share in the PC market shows that the Mac is up, year-over-year, and has been steadily rising for some time. It's hard to grow market share dramatically when you're starting from such a low place, as I've also demonstrated in the past. My conclusion is that the Mac is gaining on Windows at a slow pace, sure, but gaining nonetheless. The reasons are simple: Apple makes good products, people like the iPods are are willing to investigate the Mac, and some Windows customers are tired of the issues that naturally arise in a non-monolithic ecosystem where ever piece of what makes a PC a PC comes from a different company. That Apple bobbled its chance during Vista's innumerable delays in not debatable. But now that Vista is out, there's no change in the big picture, and Apple will simply continue its small market share gains for the foreseeable future. In short, this article is all over the place, and doesn't really hit on the reality of what's happening here at all."

In-other words, Mr. Stross article is seriously flawed. Likewise, his answers are naturally flawed because he based them on the wrong questions. He lumped the Macintosh market numbers into the overall computer market, one based mostly on cheaply performing and cheaply priced systems. He should have asked the question: "What is Apple's share of the high-end, high-quality segment of the market?" I'm not sure exactly what that would be, but I do know that it is near the top, if not the very top. It would be foolish to ask, "What is the percentage of the $10,000 sub-compact automobile share does BMW have?" Mr. Stross's article and conclusion, in my opinion, are just as flawed and equally foolish.

And that is my 2 cents 4 this glorious sunny Monday, September 17, 2007.

Linux Cry Babies

I recently read an interesting piece from a blog called, 'ipodminusitunes.'

In it, the author complained about Apple closing and preventing Linux users from using either the new iPods or iTunes. I understand their feelings and pain, but only to a point. After reading many of the readers responses I got the impression that they are going about it all wrong, namely they are complaining one to another and acting like Linux Cry Babies!

I feel that they have some valid points, as I mentioned, but why not direct their displeasure where it is most likely to do some good.... Apple!

My thoughts are summed up in my own reader response, which I have posted below:

"Its like Linux fans to bash anything that is not from the Open-Source community, just as OS X or Windows users like to do the very same thing to the other guy. If you can't have it... bash it!

From the opinions of many posting here, it seems that, 'hell, who needs the iPod, iTunes.. we don't!' Well, if that is the case, what are you whining about?

If the other players are so called 'better' and the other music software better than iTunes, then by all means, use them! Why cry like spoiled little brats because a 120-billion dollar corporate giant does things its way with its very own products...... just as Linux or Windows users like to do things their way, Apple likes to do things their way!

Also, if Sansa, Amarok, etc. are so much better than either the iPod or iTunes, why is that the iPod and iTunes both have a whopping 80% or more of the market?

Certainly, iPods and the iTunes are not dominant because they suck and everyone and everything else is far better then they? Over 700 million people have downloaded iTunes, is it because Amarok, Windows Media Player, etc. are all so vastly superior? I don't think so; its the opposite!

I like Linux and use it, from time-to-time, but I shall stick with the Apple products for a reason... I like em! If you don't like em.... don't use em! Its as simple as that. To each their own.

Linux is a great system, its very Unix like, but the next version of OS X, Leopard has already been certified as 100 % UNIX 3! Almost, or simply 'Unix like' is not quite the same as 100 certified Unix. Therefore, I shall use OS X, just as others will continue to use Windows and still others use Linux.

In 2006, six years after OS X client was releashed, Complz, Beryl and other Linux projects started to copy features from OS X. Expose, the Cube effect, Animations, etc.

Also, virtually all older Gui systems use Apple creations such as pull-down menu's, the trash can, drag and drop, etc., but you Linux users, like Windows users don't complain, so why start complaining now because Apple chooses to make their systems the way they want, be it in the music area or otherwise?

Personally, I think its a shame that Apple doesn't open up iTunes for Linux users, but its not my decision to make, any more than its Window or Linux users decision to make...... its Apple's decision.

Rather then complain to one another, which does nothing to help the situation, why not simply ask Apple for what you want? You want it, other wise you wouldn't be complaining, and since they have what you want, then ask them and maybe, just maybe, you shall receive? 'The squeaky wheel gets the grease,' so point that out to them, not one another.

Steve Job may be one of the world's richest men, one of the most famous and one of the most influential men in the world, but he recently demonstrated, with his extremely fast reversal of the iPhone $200 credit rebate, that he also is one of the fastest to admit that he made a mistake and man enough to make admends.

Maybe if you Linux users show him the errors of his ways he will give you what you want, be it iPods or iTunes?"

And that's my 2 cents 4 this rare Saturday posting, September 15, 2007

Germans finally get iPhone before Canadians

Schließlich kommt das iPhone nach Deutschland! Yes, thats correct, finally, next week, the iPhone comes to Germany via T-Mobile. That is according to an unnamed industry insider who has recently spoken with Reuters. Apple will allegedly use its London press event to announce the deal next week. Apple has been reported to have privately worked out a revenue-sharing deal, much like the one it did with AT&T, with the German telecommunication giant.

If true, it would be remarkable for several reasons: One, the speed in which the two giants, T-Mobile and Apple, have come to actually agree to share revenues. Before the Apple, AT&T deal, the whole concept of such a deal would have gotten you committed had you even suggested such a deal in the first place and two, and one that personally leaves a sour taste in my mouth, is that Germany and Europe (The U.K. and France are expected to conclude similar deals) will be getting the iPhone before we Canadians can! You know, the poor saps living right next door as opposed to those Europeans living, across the pond, some two or three thousand miles away!

The above unnamed industry expert, of course, didn't reveal any information on what pricing or services T-Mobile will be offering its German iPhone customers, but it will most likely be somewhat similar to the deal AT&T offers its American customers. One thing, however, that we do know for certain is that German iPhone customers won't have to pay the original high price our American cousins did. They now have the luxury of the recently announced price cuts that Apples bashers loved to complain about because they really didn't have any real complaints to complain about anyway. It has also been leaked, true or not, I don't know, that the Germans and Europeans might receive a second iPhone model complete with 3G internet service, using HSDPA and sell for for 499 Euros ($693) for the 16GB of memory model. Lucky bastards!

Meanwhile, getting back to Canada, Rogers Communications, the company that will eventually carry the iPhone here in Canada, has already warned its customers not to expect the iPhone anytime soon. It has stated that Apple is much too involved in its European negotiations that Canada isn't even on its radar screens yet. Bummer!

Never before has a company, until Apple, been able to take a long entranced industry and turn in on its head the way it did with the iPod and iPhone. But then again, Apple is no ordinary company. As I told four or five people that I recently help buy a Mac, "When you get a Mac you also get a new Mac religion with a new Mac family thrown into the deal." Mac users are really like a family which helps explain that whenever Apple's stock is down, it leaves me distressed, as if a family member was seriously ill or something..... and yet I don't even own so much as a penny, not even a Canadian penny worth of Apple stock!

The idea that we Canadians who share the longest undefended border in the world, two nations that are basically the same peoples, will have to wait until the Germans and Europeans to get the iPhone seems a little unfair, but thats life, I guess? I'm not really complaining, just wishing that the iPhone would go on sale here in Canada sooner rather than later.

On the plus side, maybe at the rate Apple is taking to bring the 'Jesus phone' here to Canada, it will have had evolved several more models past the present one and into a better, more capable, sexier and more functional and, last but not least, cheaper phone by the time it gets here?

I could live with that.

And thats my 2 cents 4 this Sunny (where I am, at least) day of Friday, September 14, 2007.

Doubts on iPhone Doubters

Despite the complaining, bitching and nagging doubters out there who claim that the sale of ONE MILLION iPhones, in a measely 74 days, is hardly a success, the facts speak for themselves: The debut of the iPhone, has in fact, been a bigger success then either Microsoft's Windows 95, XBox 360 or even the Wii launches!

Now these same Apple bashers and Microsoft shills would have to admit, wouldn't they, that those were huge successes, so why can't they admit the same for the iPhone, which, in dollars, is a much bigger success than any of those ever were? I can think of several reasons: Jealousy, envy and simply the knowledge that Apple is better than they, something that they can't possibly admit to.

What these doubting 'Thomas's' like to ignore is the fact that the first iPhone, is in fact, just that... the first. The first baby step for Apple in an area in which they are complete virgins. Imagine, just imagine will you, what Apple not only can do, but will do, once they get more experience under their belts? Hell, if the very first iPhone can generate the kind of buzz, excitement and earn some half-a-billion dollars, yes... a whopping half-billion dollars in a measly 74 days, I can barely think what Apple's second, third, fourth, etc. models are going to generate?

Since Apple announced the iPhone, it has totally disrupted the wireless industry and produced a revolution that no one saw coming. And this is just for its very first baby step. What happens when Apple really starts to run with this baby!

Now, on top of all that, you should also take into consideration the fact that Apple's first baby step with the iPhone was limited only to the U.S. and only on one carrier. What happens when Apple brings the iPhone to Europe, Asia and the rest of the world?

What happens now that the iPhone's price has been slashed by a whopping $200? I will let the quote from the headline from a DailyTech.com article, say it all, that was posted yesterday, "iPhone Sales Triple After Price Cut!

Thats right, my dear readers, the iPhone isn't a fad... its a phenomena and one that is just beginning. As DailyTech put it, "Despite the complaints, the new price cut is looking like a smart move by Apple, as the new low price appears to be driving iPhone sales into a frenzy."

This frenzy, by the way, is not, in my humble opinion, a short-term thing.... the frenzy is here to stay. Long live the frenzy! The iPhone frenzy has started and it won't be easy to stop!

In conclusion I am very thankful for one thing: That I am neither Nokia, Motorola, RIM or any of the other iPhone competitors, who will give it their best shot, but in the end, will still fall short, far short, of coming up with anything as good as the first iPhone, let alone future models!

And thats my 2 cents on the Apple iPhone doubters 4 this Thursday, September 13, 2007.

No Post Today

Today I will be off, so I apologize to my 2 readers. Back on Thursday, God willing?

The BEST Mac Web Sites

There are lots of great Macintosh related sites on the net, so being in a rush, as usual, I decided to simply list some really cool Macintosh websites for today.

The Mac sites listed below are not only my favorite, but ones that I wouldn't want to miss reading each and every day and sometimes multiple times.

In the news area there many, but my favorite, first thing every morning, last thing at night, is that I religiously visit: http://macsurfer.com/ . This site lists so many cool Mac related stories and news that there is no way one could possible go through the list, but it is fun trying.

Another great Mac news site is: www.macworld.com . Macworld is a very professional organization with great reviews plus all the news you could need. http://Macworld is also one of the oldest of all Mac sites and have a great paper magazine to boot.

The old Maccaddict magazine and website is now http://www.maclife.com and is another professional organization much as Macworld, and also has a great paper magazine of equal quality to boot.

In the rumor section you can't go wrong with the oldest out there: http://www.macosrumors.com/ . This site has a very high success rate with their rumors so I wouldn't be with out it. Sadly its not the type of site that is updated each and every day, but when it is, its worth the wait.

http://www.macrumors.com/ is also a great rumor and news site that has a high success rate along with http://thinksecret.com/and I highly recommend them both.

Some great Mac PodCasts can be found and downloaded from their respected websites such: http://www.leoville.com , http://wwww.applegazette.com/ and http://www.macsimumnews.com/.

Finally, in the blogging area I recommend the two following sites: http://www.jackwhispers.blogspot.com, better known as FIXYOURTHINKING, digitalculturebooks 'Best Technology Writing 2007 winner and News.com's blog 100 and the most excellent and extremely well written http://www.thesmallwave.com/

Both of these sites are well written, informative and down right addictive. Highly recommended to any one interested in anything Apple or Mac related.

And thats my 2 cents 4 this Tuesday, September 11 (May we never forget!), 2007

Do you what a ........

Ever see a Prowler at night, or for that matter, during the daylight hours? Know what a Horsey Horseless, Fuller Dymaxion, Crosley Hotshot, Zunndapp Janus, or a Peel Trident are?

Well, all of the above are automobiles, but not just any old automobiles mind you. Nope, these dandy little babies (some hardly could be called 'little babies.') are also part of what Time called the '50 Worst cars of All Time.' And that Prowler, of course, would be the Plymouth Prowler from 1997.

This wonderful article goes on to illustrate some of the most unsafe, strange, dumb, weird and down-right ugliest cars ever created since 1899, and some of which I personally remember seeing and evening lusting after while growing up.

One of these turkeys, that I personally remember, was, what I call, the Ralph Nader Car, or as others called it, the Corvair from 1961. Ah, this little American version of the Volkswagen Bug was a disaster, a complete disaster from the get go. But I remember, since I personally owned one, was that it had an incredible smooth ride and suspension. Mind you, I was only six or seven years old at the time and my Corvair was, in actual fact, no more than an old 'Dinky Toy.' Ah, but I remember it well, like it was yesterday. It was blue with a white interior and, did I mention it had an incredible smooth ride and suspension?

Still, yet another car that I remember, from my youth, was a car built in my home town. I remember visiting the factory several times and the car was absolutely beautiful, but the Bricklin SVI was the opposite of what it was supposed to be - a safety vehicle.

As the Time article points out, "The only Bricklin I ever sat in caught on fire and burned to the axles. This is notably ironic, since the car's creator — the smooth-talking Malcolm Bricklin — didn't include an ashtray or lighter in the car, to discourage smoking. Despite its hand-removing, 100-lb. gullwing doors, the SV1 was supposed to exemplify the safer car of the future; the name stands for "Safety Vehicle 1." The bodies were made of brightly colored, dent-resistant plastic, like PlaySkool furniture. Another safety feature: incredible, crust-of-the-Earth-cooling slowness. All those resin panels and compressible bumpers added hundreds of pounds that the emissions-limited V8s couldn't handle. This thing couldn't outrun the Rose Bowl Parade. Less than 3,000 of the wedgy coupes were built, but Malcolm Bricklin was far from through, as we'll see."

One of the most recent 'worst 50 cars' listed is the Hummer H2. Oh, but how I love this gas guzzling monster. Just what I need for the woods and hunting (I only hunt with a camera, so please... no hate mail!) and a great just 'get me deep into the woods and out again' type vehicle. I also love the way the H2 dwarfs and intimidates lesser vehicles, including, by the way, its baby brother, the Hummer H3.

Well, obviously I can't cover all fifty cars in this little blog, but you can by clicking on the Time link below. Some of these cars are truly just as amazing as they are strange. But, before I forget to remember, did I mention how smooth the suspension and ride of that Chevrolet Corvair was?

And that's my 2 cents 4 Monday, September 10, 2007.

Mother charged in Madeleine's Disapearance

CNN, BBC, CBC, you name it, all of the world's major news organizations are reporting that the beautiful little British girl, Madeleine's mother, Kate McCann, has been named as a prime suspect in her disappearance and, what police consider to be her death.

Well, she, like all of us, is innocent until proven guilty, but the fact that police have found little Madeleine's blood in the station wagon the her parents rented some 25 days after Madeleine's disappearance will make it hard, very hard, for the her mother to explain. Her father, Gerry McCann, is also a suspect, but has not yet been questioned or charged. Both deny any responsibility in their daughters disappearance or death.

According to Madeleine's aunt, Philomena McCann, the police are suspecting that the girl's mother accidentally killed the child and then panicked and tried to cover the death by concocting the story of the child being abducted. Sounds possible, but we will all have to wait until the police investigation is completed to know for sure, but some how, in the pit of my stomach, I have suspected as much.

CNN reported that, "Madeleine's parents, who are both doctors from Leicestershire in central England, have campaigned internationally to secure the safe return of their daughter, including having a meeting with Pope Benedict XVI and securing support from Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and soccer star David Beckham." One other person, British national Robert Murat, who has denied any involvement, is the only other formal suspect in the case.

Regardless of who is responsible in the case of the little child, be it a stranger or her parents, the fact remains that the 'not quite' four-year old has gone missing and, most likely is dead. It is a tragedy that should not have happened, but sadly, did! When parents say they left several small children completely alone while they went out for dinner raises many reg flags.

Could it be that they went out for dinner, came home and discovered that the child had an accident that resulted in the precious lost of life of their daughter? Such a scenario certainly could and would have panicked the couple, who then tossed out their better judgement in concocting the kidnapped story. I could understand that, but, of course, that doesn't clear them. If they did, in fact, leave their small children alone to go out to have dinner together, then they are just as guilty of Madeleine's disappearance and death as surely as if some pervert entered the apartment and seized the girl!

And thats my 2 cents on this sad and painful story 4 Friday, the 7th. of September, 2007.

New iPods at long last!

Finally, at long last, Apple has introduced a total revamp of its iPod line, from the lowly Shuffle, Nano, iPod video to the new 'top-of-the-line' iPod Touch!

All of the new iPods look great, have new improved interfaces and the iPod Touch, what can you say ..... Beautiful! That is one model that a lot of people wanted, myself included.

Amazingly, Apple also dropped a bomb shell, one that a lot of people such as myself didn't see coming... they dropped the price of the iPhone by a whopping $200! The 4-gigabyte is now history and the high-end 8-gigabyte is now the same price as the iPod Touch S399 U.S. Apparently, either Apple, as some have suggested, is having trouble keeping the sales momentum going for the iPhone, or, as Jobs publicly stated that they simply wanted to make it available to more people, especially as we head into the Christmas shopping season. This should at least stop one of the biggest complaints about the iPhone.... that it was too expensive, even though other phones such as the Nokia N95 and LG Prada cost the same or more.

Hmmmm.... wonder what the boys and girls up in Redmond are thinking? The recent $50 price drop they announced the other day is hardly going to cut it now. Come on Microsoft, surely you can do better than that? How about designing and building something that people actually like and want for a change.

Getting back to the new iPod line, most people seem to love them, everyone that is except Wall Street. Apple lost billions and billions in market cap because some investors are looking at it the wrong way, rather than it increasing Apple's market penetration. This just points out what is so obviously true: The financial markets are primarily moved by sheer GREED and FEAR!

The iPods are looking good; Apple's stock not looking so good, but it will recover. Apple's market share will increase for both the iPod line and the iPhone lines and I, finally, will break down and buy my first iPod, most likely the iPod Touch.

And thats my 2 cents 4 this day of Thursday, September 6, 2007.

A Wold Gone Mad!

The world has gone mad, absolutely mad I tell you! It matters not where one looks, from one corner of the globe to the other, people have gone mad!

Remember poor little Yossif, the beautiful five-year old innocent who's beautiful face was sprayed with gasoline by four Islamic terrorists and set on fire? I will never forget it. How about a few years ago when Islamic terrorists killed hundreds of precious Russian children in Beslan? How could any one forget that?

Well, hang on to your hats, because I just read an incredible piece in the WorldNetDaily website, one of the best news sources ever, I might add. What prey tell are they reporting today? Simple: Another case of the world going stark raving mad.... mad I tell you!

It seems that a Muslim who openly compared President Bush to the likes of Adolf Hilter and spoken for a group that endorses the death of jews has himself accepted a position on a congressional committee dealing with anti-Semitism! Thats right, believe it or not, U.S. Rep.Keith Ellison. D-Minn is serving on that very committee! Hard to believe, but believe me when I say this: You can't make up something like this... its just too weird and utterly MAD!

"It is highly offensive for a congressional task force on anti-Semitism to allow a man that willingly speaks in front of anti-Semitic groups to be associated with its organization," said Joe Kaufman, president of Americans Against Hate, which also calls itself a terror watchdog organization. "[The Congressional Task Force on Anti-Semitism] needs to end its relationship with Ellison immediately."

Mr. Ellison has announced his decision to join the 110th. Congress task force on his very own website: http://ellison.house.gov/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=93&Itemid=1

WorldNetDaily further reports, "The Taskforce promotes religious tolerance throughout the world, and brings a strong voice in the United States Congress to those whose basic religious rights and freedoms have been persecuted," he said.

"I am honored to join the Congressional Anti-Semitism Task Force because it embodies the ideals and principles that have guided and shaped my life," Mr. Ellison said.

Kaufman, however, noted that Ellison has spoken several times for the Muslim American Society's Minnesota chapter, which promotes the Quran on its website, including statements such as: "Fight and slay the pagans wherever ye find them, an (sic) seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war)."

Personally. even though I love people regardless of their faith, I find it mad, absolutely mad, that a Muslim who has made the kinds of statements that Mr. Ellison has made and who has spoken for groups that are as anti Jewish as you can get would be asked, let alone, accept to be on an anti-Jewish task force. Did I tell you already that I think it is absolutely mad? Well, for the record: I THINK IT IS ABSOLUTELY, I MEAN UTTERLY MAD!

When you think of it, its like asking a mad dog to babysit a bunch of cats, a fox to gaurd the chicken coup, or Apple selling Zunes and Microsoft selling and praising the iPod. Would any one dare to propose that Al Qeida safe guard American nuclear missiles? Would anyone even think of asking drug cartels to run anti drug clinics? No, of course not! To do so would automatically label one as being ready for the loony bin and rightfully so.

The world has gone mad I tell you ...... absolutely MAD!

And thats my 2 cents 4 today, Wednesday, September 5, 2007.

New iPods Wednesday?

Wow, its hard to believe, but Reuters is reporting that the iPhone is now selling more than all of the other smart phones COMBINED! This, of course, is in the U.S. Not only that, tomorrow Apple is not only expected to introduce an all new iPod lineup, but, in-addition, a new 'Nano' iPhone that would be smaller and a lot less expensive. This has been sending, as usual, Apple's stock sky high yet again. So far its up some $3.65 as I write, or 2.62 %. Nice! Sadly, I don't own any Apple stock. Not so nice.

Ah, what I wouldn't give to be a fly-on-the-wall in Steve Ballmer's office when this news hits his ear. I wonder how many chairs he will throw around and break this time?

As far as the iPods are concerned, the rumors have been flying like crazy all over the web. Digitimes is confirming that they will be a couple of touch-screen models, or should I say multi-touch. This, naturally, would include one very similar to the iPhone's built-in iPod. That in my thinking would be really great news for Apple's high-flying stock, sending it, no doubt this time, reaching all the way to the stars. Not so for Apple's competitors. God only knows what fears of tomorrow lurks in their hearts?

The Nano iPod itself is reported to be a short, stubby little thing, similar too, but not quite like the present model. It will have a click wheel and a larger touch screen. The baby iPod will look and act the very same but with a greater storage. Other rumors are saying that the iPod, or at least some models, will, at long last, sport a radio receiver and allow for downloading directly to the iPod. I hope so, its about time.

I, like you, the other two or three readers of my little blog, can only guess and hope that the new iPods will be as great as some of the rumors are indicating. However, like you, I will just have to wait with baited breath until the Apple mother-ship unveils them on Wednesday. What a bummer, I hate waiting!

Hopefully, tomorrow will reveal not only iPod's enabled with radio, WiFi, multi-touch, etc., but also other features that no one, as of yet, have even thought or dreamed about.

Personally, me, myself and I, are hoping for a new iPod with not only a built-in radio, TV, GPS, but also, for me, most importantly - a built-in can opener. Oh, mabye they can even throw in an automatice electric butt scrather. That would be nice. In any event, my fingers are crossed.

And thats my 2 cents 4 the day on tomorrows new iPods, this Tuesday, September 4, 2007.

Day off ... Its Labor Day!

The Labor Day holiday began in 1882 some 125 years ago, and in the spirit of that day, I have decided to take the next 125 years off from this blog! Just kidding, I will be here, God willing, to post yet another bit of dribble for all two of my faithful readers tomorrow.

So, to all laborers, in both the United States and Canada, have a great holiday and a safe one too.

And that's my 2 cents 4 this Labor Day, Monday, September 3, 2007.
